Who We Are

The Cardinal Stritch Retreat House, a ministry supported by the generosity of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago and its other benefactors, invites you to come away to pray.  This invitation to pray is extended to you as you pass through our front door.  Overhead is the inscription "Venite seorsum.” Come away by yourselves--come away to pray (Mark 6:31). This preserve of nature, comprising approximately 900 acres of forest and water, is the ideal setting for beholding the glory of God. The Cardinal Stritch Retreat House is a place to reflect, to pray and to rest for priests, bishops, deacons, men and women religious and all the Christian faithful. We provide the hospitality to assure your comfort and provide the quiet and peace necessary to hear God’s call.

We sponsor a variety of retreats: traditional preached retreats, silent and directed retreats, retreats for particular groups, and private retreats. The Cardinal Stritch Retreat House is a center for spiritual renewal serving Bishops, Priests and Deacons, and all who might come to this center to strengthen their relationship with God through prayer, scholarship and reflection. The Cardinal Stritch Retreat House was originally founded to serve the Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago, and this continues to be a primary group, but today the retreat house extends its service to all people of the Archdiocese of Chicago who would like to come for some days of prayer and interior renewal. The Retreat House also extends its hospitality to priests, deacons and lay people who serve the church from the outside the Archdiocese of Chicago, especially those from the Province of Illinois and those from Region VII, The Retreat House strives to serve all who are seeking to nurture their faith by coming to this center for spiritual renewal.

The Facility

The Retreat House has ground level access with plenty of parking, elevator access to all floors, and a beautiful chapel. There is also a comfortable library and common room, a meeting room on the lower lever for up to 35 persons, and is WI-FI equipped. The chapel, dining room and all public meeting space is also air conditioned. 

Beautiful Grounds

There are hundreds of acres of forest and miles of shoreline to explore. Our property is contiguous to that of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary and retreatants have access to Seminary grounds. The wildlife includes deer, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and a host of other wildlife.

Guest Rooms

We have 48 rooms available for your use. Each room is quiet, comfortably appointed and well-lit so as to be a place of prayer and contemplation.  Each room has: a new queen size bed, a private bathroom, shower, and full-size bed; a recliner, dresser, an air-conditioning unit for the summer and radiator-heat for cooler months.

The Dining Room

Our dining room can seat up to 56 people and our kitchen staff is truly excited to demonstrate their skills in both courtesy as well as efficiency with large groups. The private retreatant will also experience the kitchen staff’s solicitude for his or her comfort and special needs.

  • Meals are served at 8:00 am, 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm
  • There is a snack room with soft drinks, coffee, fruit and snacks
  • We are able to accommodate special dietary needs

The Chapel

The Chapel can seat up to 54 people and is beautifully furnished. There are colorful stained glass windows along the nave and contains statues of Christ, Mary, and Joseph. The Chapel also includes a Yamaha Clavinova Piano and liturgical books in English, Spanish, and Polish. It is air-conditioned and has a marble altar.
